I make no apologies about being LDS, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or as we are often called, Mormons. That is my belief system and my foundation. So it is natural that my healing is based in my core beliefs and values. I have found these programs to be extememly helpful to members of my recovery group, my 12-Step group and friends I have met along the way.
With the exception of LifeStar, all of these programs are LDS based. It is what I know, so it is what I share. If you have other religious programs that you have used and found helpful then I ask you to share them with me so I can provide those recommendations for other religions as well.
LifeStar Network For over 20 years, LifeStar has been helping individuals, spouses, and families heal from the devastating affects of pornography addiction and other sexually compulsive behaviors. Through an innovative and proven three phase treatment program, this intensive outpatient group therapy approach gives participants the resources, support, and structure needed to experience a successful recovery from the damaging effects of pornography and sexual addiction.
LifeStar is an Internationally recognized treatment program in nearly 40 Cities across the U.S. and Canada. Developed by Dan Gray and Todd Olson, LifeStar is run by highly trained and licensed therapists who specialize in sexual addiction recovery. Each phase of recovery is specifically designed to gently uncover, yet aggressively heal, the destructive patterns that create and maintain addictive behaviors. Workbooks, along with other materials, help provide education and structure throughout the different phases of treatment.
LifeStar is the Program that I initially settled on. It is a fantastic program for spouses to do together and/or separately. They have everything you need in-house; support groups, classes, therapists, retreats, etc. I love it! It is more pricey than the others, but it is what works best for me. I am two years into the program, and I finally see glimpses of myself again. I love my group, The Cupcake Warriors! I just cannot say enough good things about them! However, as it became clear that my husband was not interested in saving our marriage I found I needed something that would help me make the transition into being single.
LifeStar has other associated programs all over the country, like this one in Arizona:
Family Strategies Our Sexual Addiction Treatment program is supervised by CSAT therapists and follows the task-model created by Patrick Carnes. The program is designed for adult heterosexual men and their wives. The program is based upon the pioneering work of Patrick Carnes, Pia Mellody, Claudia Black, Stefanie Carnes, Ken Adams, Jon Bradshaw, Rob Weiss, Don Hilton and other professional clinicians who have researched this topic over the past 30 years.
Bloom for Women The foundation of a relationship is built upon trust, love and mutual respect. The shocking discovery of betrayal in marriage induces feelings of chaos, confusion, and debilitating despair. Betrayal creates such intense emotions for the afflicted spouse that the memories and trauma may remain for months, even years later.
This program is a series of video classes and a blog. They are exceptionally insightful and helpful! I still use them for all sorts of information on addiction and recovery.
Addo Recovery Programs for both spouses. When you are betrayed by the person who is supposed to love, respect and support you the most, your world shatters. It may feel as though the whole life of your relationship has been a lie.
This is the first program that was recommended to me. I would say that it literally saved my life! It was free for women at the time and it helped me cope until I could find the best place for me. Now Addo is mostly for the addict, but their woman’s program is now BLOOM (see above).
I ended up at Addo. Besides being closer to me, they had everything I needed to heal from all the additional trauma caused by needing to divorce my husband. I was impressed that they did an intake evalutation of my emotional condition, running a series of tests to determine what I needed. They took into account my emotional, physical and spiritual needs. They built me an individualized program based on their findings, including EMDR, yoga, individual therapy and meditation.
Prana Yoga at Roots
Yoga practice is amazing for working through trauma. Addo Recovery has a new program called Roots. In addition to Roots the yoga instructor has her own blog. Follow Sariah’s Blog! She is amazing! Breathe with Me
Life Changing Services Life Changing Services is a group of clinicians, coaches, educators and volunteers led by Maurice W. Harker. LCS provides exceptional individual, marital and family counseling as well as several impactful treatment and self-mastery programs. Those who come to Life Changing Services are comforted by the open incorporation of Eternal Principles taught in the LDS Church. The leaders of LCS have worked very hard to synergize these principles with the accurate elements of the science of psychology and the fine art of counseling. You are invited to read our material and watch the attached videos to gain confidence in our work and our people. We are here to serve.
LCS is also excellent! I checked them out thoroughly. I would probably be going to this program if they had been closer to me, because they are LDS based. They do have a wonderful online program, but I needed to have real people to interact with. I actually tried to do both, but they discouraged me from doing too much all at once, which I appreciated so much.
Healing Through Christ is a 12-Step Program created especially for the victims of Betrayal Trauma.
I do this program too, off and on. Sometimes I find it overwhelming with everything else I am doing, so my attendance is spotty. However, I love, love, love this program! I went to 4 12-step groups before I found this one, and this one fit just right! It was written by a woman who is living this, so you will get that “we get it” feeling from page one! So helpful, hopeful and full of faith…exactly what I needed.
LDS Addiction Recovery Whether you yourself struggle with addiction or associate with someone who does, these gospel principle-based steps can be a blessing in your life. The Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous have been adapted into a framework of the doctrines, principles, and beliefs of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They are presented as key principles. You will learn how to apply these key principles and find that they can change your life.
This is the official addiction recovery program for the LDS Church. While I believe it to be the one of the best 12-step programs for addicts, I do not recommend it for their partners. This program has not caught up with the latest research on Betrayal Trauma and lacks the ability to support the woman properly. This is for your husband, but not for you.
